Anita Jung, originally from Chicago, is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores narrative, identity, and transformation. She stands with her native city in the fight for social justice.
This body of work emerged from a collaboration with the UIowa Physicist, Yannick Meurice’s First Year Seminar, where they sought to train an AI program to distinguish between good and bad design. The resulting imagery, filtered through digital processes and carved on a CNC router with the assistance of my UIowa artist colleague, Adam Krueger, into shina plywood matrices and printed using the traditional Mokuhanga methods.
These prints were printed during artist residencies at the Mokuhanga Innovation Laboratory in Echizen, Japan, and at Taller 99 in Santiago, Chile, two studios filled with the energy, generosity, and artistry of women I am honored to know. These pieces carry their spirit, as well as that of my three sisters, my niece, and my daughter. They speak to our meandering paths, our calm and persistent resistance, and our capacity to thrive despite the forms and structures that seek to contain us.
The work was realized through the generosity of International Programs, the Obermann Center, and the Center for Asian and Pacific Studies.
